9th Annual Shoe Memorial, December 6, 2011

December 6th is Canada’s National Day of Mourning for women who have met with violent deaths. It commemorates the memory of the fourteen women who were methodically killed in Montreal (1989) at the L’Ecole Polytechnique. Vancouver’s shoe memorial is organized by Pat Kelln and the shoes will be on display at the Vancouver Art Gallery. It is a memorial to all the women in British Columbia who have not survived violence.

This is Tri-city Transitions third year of supporting and collecting shoes and boots for this worthy event. Our goal each year has been 100 pairs. Last year the total reached 120 and this year we collected 150 pairs.

It’s no surprise that several of our sources weren’t able to donate this year as I’m sure their closets are bare. Our numbers would greatly have dropped if it weren’t for the assistance and diligence of our Woman’s Resource Centre. Our coordinator Angie and the volunteers endeavored to bring up our numbers.

Thanks to all staff who donated their shoes and to Donna, who transported the many boxes and bags from the centre to me. Your shoes will stand with others to send the message that “violence is not acceptable “

Thank you for your support and contributions.
